China Saves Face

Most Chinese have a strong desire to ‘save face.’ You have probably heard that expression a lot now that Trump wants free and now fair trade with other countries—especially China.
Hitler ordered his army to take Stalingrad. It would have been wise decision (for him) had his troops circumvented that city, but no—Hitler had to save face. The Battle of Stalingrad ended up being the turning point and Germany’s devastating defeat there hastened the end of the war. National pride and unwise alliances led to WWI. Countries that had no real reason to fight each other died by the millions—just to save face. This ‘saving face’ business often causes millions of heads to roll.

China has always been obsessed with ‘saving face.’ A politically incorrect book titled “Ways That Are Dark,” was published in 1933 by a diplomat and journalist who lived in China for over a year. His book revealed a lot of about the overall character of the Chinese people—and their predilection for lying in order to save face. To them such lies were a way of life—especially during business transactions. Such lies were routine, but they became much worse after the communist takeover. The CCP can do no wrong—it’s always someone else’s fault—especially the USA’s fault. The Soviets had the same attitude, but they could not blame Chernobyl on anyone but themselves. As a result, they lost face and soon fell out of power.
The Chinese Marxists do not hesitate to take advantage of America by stealing technology, hacking our government institutions, buying out politicians (and Hunter Biden), infiltrating and spying on our colleges and corporations. If we object, they immediately begin lying. A Chicom spy balloon floated over America and spied on us for many days while Biden did nothing. The Chinese said it was a weather balloon, a ludicrous lie. Finally, Joe ordered the balloon to be shot down over the Atlantic. The Chinese were not apologetic. They do not apologize—that would be losing face! Instead, they complained loudly about an immoral USA shooting down their property.
The Trump tariffs have triggered a new wave of Chinese face saving. Not only that, but their own slaves, er, citizens are getting ticked off and worried about losing face because they are losing their jobs over the Chicom’s failure to budge on tariff negotiations. China had an unfair advantage but saw Trump’s tariffs as a challenge to their pride. They had to save face. We all saw what happened when Chinese citizens demanded freedom. The Chicoms mercilessly massacred them at Tiananmen Square. They had to save face and maintain their power.
China prospered under the trade imbalance made possible in part by NAFTA and the WTO. They ignored the rules they were supposed to follow under those organizations, but nobody did anything because they knew China was sensitive and they didn’t want to cause them to lose face. The communists spent a lot of the trade imbalance money on building up a massive military. Taiwan is their immediate target—they must assimilate the non-communist country back to the mainland to save face.
Now we read that China may indeed come to the bargaining table. It’s in their best interest because the tariffs will hurt them far more than it will hurt the US. Trump is an excellent business man willing to cut a deal, but the Chinese are notorious for finding ways to cheat on deals. To them, that’s good business, but they may find that saving face has become a lot more expensive.
