There’s a new sheriff in town, America is back.
President Teddy Roosevelt was a man of action and he wanted to see the construction of the Panama Canal. At the beginning of the 20th Century, Panama was part of the nation of Colombia. Roosevelt negotiated a deal with them: The Panama Canal in exchange for $10 million and an annual rent of $250,000 to Colombia. (250k was a lot of money in those days). Colombia agreed, but then changed their mind. They wanted a lot more cash and informed Roosevelt that the deal was off.
Roosevelt was not one to take no for an answer and pulled out his ‘big stick.’ He rallied the people of Panama to revolt against Colombia. A new country was born and the Panama Canal was back on the agenda. The Panamanians received the same deal that Colombia would have received. Construction on the canal began in 1904.
Trump has adopted Roosevelt’s big stick approach. There was a brief trade war between President Trump and the President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro. It started when Colombia would not accept the repatriation of Colombian illegal aliens to their home country. Petro would not allow the flights land in Colombia and turned them away. Trump was not one to take no for an answer and pulled out his big stick.
Trump told Petro that if did not choose wisely Colombia will face retaliatory measures including:
• An immediate 25% tariff on all Colombian imports, escalating to 50% within a week.
• A travel ban and immediate visa revocations for Colombian government officials and their allies.
• Visa sanctions on party members, family members, and supporters of the Colombian government.
• Enhanced inspections by U.S. Customs and Border Protection for Colombian nationals and cargo.
President Petro responded to President Trump’s ‘Big Stick’ with his own threat of a 25% tariff on all American goods, giving an impression that Colombia was willing to engage in a trade war. But after some chest-beating, Petro agreed to all Trump terms and accepted US military flights, thus bringing back the Colombian illegals to their home country. Petro even offered his own presidential plane to fly the Colombians home in ‘dignity.’ We are sure the criminals aboard did not extend such dignity to their American victims.
