Pennies To Heaven

Cartoon published 02/11/2025

When our country began, metal coins were the norm. Each denomination was worth its weight in valuable metal. The silver dollar is still Constitutional money (supposedly) and it’s marked as containing 371.25 grains of fine silver. Gold was and still is the king of the hill as far as real money goes—but the penny? It too was worth its weight in copper, and in the early days it was a big slab. Actually, the word penny derives from a small English coin (denny) and the official name for it in America is a ‘cent.’ That slab of copper known as 1 cent could buy a small loaf of bread in 1800.

When President Johnson replaced silver coins with clad, he predicted nothing would change, but the silver coins were quickly removed from the market by the general public. They knew better. Bad money chases away good money.

As for the cent, it remained copper, but it was far smaller than the 1800 coin. Still, in 1982 the cent was changed to zinc with a thin coating of copper. That was because copper prices had risen too much, thus making it too expensive to mint.

As the years went by the Fed’s debt dollar lost most of its value. The ‘penny’ became a nuisance and was assigned to household jars.

It now costs 3 cents to mint 1 cent. It makes no sense, but the penny never went away. The US Mint lost $85 million producing pennies in fiscal year 2024. The Democrats claim the amount is trifling, but considering the cent has been nearly worthless for decades…well, all those millions add up. Why do the Democrats want to keep us annoyed with useless zinc discs? Maybe they like to see what they can get away with—just like all the other corruption now being revealed.

It’s time to get rid of the penny. Trump can do it, and after that he can get rid of the Federal Reserve for ruining our money in the first place.
