Description

“The Finish Line,” 24” x 11,” oil on canvas. Comes with a high-quality wood frame.

This was the first horse race painting I did, but it never got beyond the underpainting stage. I decided I wanted a much wider canvas for it and started over. That painting sold, but then, about 5 years later, I came across this painting again and I decided to finish it. This version has brighter colors and is a bit more jarring, which helps convey random action.

During my newspaper career, I once went to a racetrack near Seattle on an assignment. I have since forgotten the reason for going there, but I had never been to a race track before and I was greatly impressed by the pageantry of it all. Horse racing is much more exciting if observed in person.

On a lark, I made a $5 bet on the number 5 horse. I didn’t even know what to say at the betting window. The clerk had help me—he quickly spotted my greenhorn status. He told me what to say the next time, but there was no next time. It was the only horse race bet I ever made.

The odds were long, but my horse came in first and I won $50. That’s why the number 5 is featured in this work. A good movie that reminds me of my experience is “Let It Ride,” starting Richard Dreyfuss. I never let my winnings ride—I pocketed it and left.

This painting is offered at $1,500.
