RIP James Earl Jones

Cartoon Published 09/10/2024

James Earl Jones lived a long and eventful life. A graduate of the University of Michigan, he went on to become an Army Ranger and was honorably discharged as a first lieutenant. He went on to stage acting—he was an eloquent actor of Shakespeare. He then and then to perform on TV and movies. He was nominated for an Academy Award for his performance as boxer Jack Johnson. He won countless awards including an Academy Award in 2010.

You may also remember the CNN slogan. “this is CNN.”  A slogan given impact by the voice of Jones that made it both iconic and memorable.

Jones is perhaps best known for being the voice of Lord Darth Vader in the ‘Star Wars’ trilogy. Darth Vader was one of the most memorable ‘bad guys’ in movie history. He looked ominous, but it was his voice that was the most chilling. That voice belonged to James Earl Jones. The one actor who was never actually on the screen was the most important in the series. Darth eventually kills the evil emperor and escapes the ‘dark side.’ Vader died, but Jones will live on as long as the original “Star Wars” are played.

I saw the first ‘Star Wars’ film when it came out in 1977. I was still in college and I thought the movie was thrilling and spectacular. I had never seen anything like it and it set a new standard for special effects. My favorite ’Star Wars’ film is “The Empire Strikes Back” in which Vader announces, “I am your father” to Luke Skywalker. That was James Earl Jones at his iconic best.
