Iran Holds No Cards

“We had a deal. It was a done deal, and then they broke it. They always break it. We’ve had 10 deals with these people, and so we’re just going to hit them very hard.” — President Trump
US negotiators thought a long-term peace deal with Iran had been achieved after an 11-hour meeting on July 12. Then the leaders from Iran quickly introduced new demands. The IRGC and mullahs are liars and remain fanatical in their hatred of the US and Israel. How can they be trusted? They can’t, and they’ve proved it repeatedly. They’d rather be bombed to oblivion than give up their hatred and make a deal.
It didn’t have to be this way. Jimmy Carter could have supported the Shah by sending our military there help to support him. Yes, we know the Shah was installed by the CIA, which was wrong, but the damage was done, but the religious nut jobs that overthrew the Shah were bad news. They made it clear their goal was the destruction of Israel and America.

Iran’s hostage taking in 1979 was an act of war, but Carter was weak. The Shah was trying to westernize his Persian country, but now that country lives by medieval doctrines while their military builds up hyper-modern weaponry—including a nuclear bomb. Subsequent presidents did nothing until Obama and Biden did worse than nothing—they sent Iran billions of dollars in a feeble attempt to halt their nuclear ambitions. Iran must have had a good laugh at that weakness. They probably thought Trump was weak, too…and all they had to do was wait for him to declare victory and leave. That would allow them to resume work on nuclear weapons all over again. They underrated Trump and now they’re paying the price.

Saudi Arabia has now joined the fray. They can’t allow Iran to control the Strait of Hormuz—a common waterway shared by many countries and they’re fed up with terrorism from Iran and its proxies. Many say Trump is in the pocket of Israel. Does that mean Saudi Arabia is now in that pocket, too? Of course not—the anti-Israel hatred is widespread, but the war in Iran was something inevitable, because the global flow of oil was at stake.
The Iranian people have endured far worse under the mullahs than the Shah and it would help if they could rise up and toss out the IRGC, but the latter has all the guns. Now it’s up to the US to free them—and open up the Strait. Iran is no longer holding any cards.
