Luigi Nabbed

Cartoon published 12/11/2024

Luigi Mangione was arrested at a McDonald’s restaurant in Pennsylvania. He is the suspect in the murder of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson—and the evidence against him looks strong. He was carrying a U.S. passport and fake IDs—one of those was used when he checked in at a Manhattan hostel. The police confiscated the murder weapon, which was still in his backpack. They found a manifesto that condemned capitalism and bullet casings with the same engraving (Delay, deny and possibly depose) as those found at the murder scene.

That doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of questions that need answering. For one thing, Mangione was a very smart individual. He went to an Ivy League prep school and graduated as the valedictorian. He went on to get a master’s degree in college. The 26-year old is very smart—so why was he captured with evidence he could have easily discarded? As a computer expert he must have known he was being recorded all over the place. He kept his phone is a signal-blocking bag so he wouldn’t be detected, but why did he drop his mask and smile at the hotel staff? Why did he have lunch at a MacDonald’s where he could be easily recognized?

He was recognized by either a customer or a restaurant employee. They reported it to the manager who called the police. So who will get the $60,000 reward? That’s unclear, and so is his motivation. Perhaps a family member was rejected for treatment because United Healthcare refused to fund it. That theory doesn’t seem plausible because Mangione comes from a very wealthy family—they could easily afford their own private healthcare.

Speaking of that, Mangione himself suffered from lower back pain and had surgery to correct it. It involved large screws going into his lower spine. Apparently it was botched and left Mangione who became a very angry young man who may have been determined to get even. If he was on pain medication that might have influenced his murderous intentions.

Or perhaps the FBI planted the gun, US passport, fake ID, and a manifesto admitting his guilt in order to frame him since they are unable to locate the actual killer. This is unlikely since Mangione shouted out to reporters that he was happy the CEO was dead. For now we are left with a lot of unanswered questions. One thing we do know for sure: Mangione was right about one thing.

Our healthcare system is truly broken and the shooting triggered a wave of complaints about health insurance rather than sympathy for the victim of murder.
