“The Swan of Tuonela”

The Swan of Tuonela is a sacred bird from the Finnish epic folklore, “Kalevala.” The swan swims on the coal-black Tuonela River, which separates our world from the land of the dead. The hero of the epic is Lemminkäinen, who is ordered by his king to kill the swan, but he hears its sad song and fails. Lemminkäinen is killed, but resurrected later on. The Finnish composer Sibelius immortalized the swan in his tone poem, “Lemminkäinen Suite.” My painting is based on the music of Sibelius.
